I'm not even gay and I was more interested in the results of this than anything else on the ballot (only because the outcome of the presidential race was a given). It's interesting that one of the "yes" contingent's main arguments was that teachers would discuss gay marriage with their students, i.e., being gay is really bad so unless you want your kids to be among this evil sect than you had better vote yes.

I get the irony that voters didn’t give into racial bias and essentially embraced a member of one of the most discriminated against minorities in our country by voting an African American man into the presidency while essentially telling another minority of the population that they aren't worthy of being allowed to get married for no other reason than for being who they are and what they do in their personal lives. What bothers me (and I don’t think I’ve heard any commentary on this) is the reverse discrimination displayed by the 96% of African Americans who voted for Obama. I understand the historical significance of him being elected and do think it’s an important moment in our country’s history, but are we to believe that 96% of AAs really feel that he’s a more worthy candidate than McCain is or were their votes strictly a result of their racial bias? If the latter, how is that any different from a white person not voting for Obama explicitly because he’s black? Call me crazy, but I was under the assumption that people should vote for whomever they feel would make the best candidate regardless of their race, sex, religion, etc...well maybe sex should be a consideration (kidding).

I know, there I go again rambling on your blog.

"Nat",
Totally right. I had a "heated discussion" (as I like to call fighting) on my friends Facebook with one of his "friends". You put this much more eloquently and less accusatory than he did so I agree. :)
We completely de-facebook-ed my friends profile :(
More apologies owed now!
Rant on Nat!

Yep, interesting with the reverse discrimination. Also interesting that something like 70% of AA's voted yes on prop 8. Food for thought.....

I know, I almost added that fact too. I've got to try to put this out of my head or the hypocrisy of the whole thing will drive me crazy. I would've loved to have seen the results of some exit surveys though just to get a sense of what people's rationale (or lack thereof) was.

BTW Michele, nice new word.
